Why You Saw That

A feed is not a list of what is best, or newest, or most true. It is a guess about what will keep you there, made by something that can see what you watched and cannot see what you thought of it. Three consequences follow, and none of them is anybody being wicked: what it optimises for is not what you would choose, everyone is looking at a different one, and the feelings that travel best are not the pleasant ones.
