Putting Things in Order
You can only ever compare two things at once. Everything else about sorting is built out of that one move: go along the row, swap any pair that is the wrong way round, and do it again until a pass goes by with no swaps at all. Then the payoff — finding a name in a shuffled row means looking at every card, and in a sorted row you can stop the moment you have gone past where it should have been.
