Six More Letters

DIRECTIONS: Turkish uses your alphabet plus these six letters. Every letter says one sound, always.
ğ
silent — it stretches the vowel before it
ı
a dull uh, and it is a letter in its own right
ö
as in the German schön, or roughly the vowel in her
ü
as in the French tu — say ee with round lips
Two different i’s, each with a capital:
I ı
no dot, ever — a dull uh sound
İ i
a dot on both — the ee sound you know
Now read some: say each one, then guess what it means.
| Turkish | Say it out loud | What do you think it means? |

| el | | |
| göz | | |

Some you can’t guess: Turkish isn’t related to English at all.
- Which was easiest to say out loud, and why?
- English has one letter i. Turkish has two. Say what a Turkish reader gains from that, in one sentence.
