DIRECTIONS: The faster and heavier a moving thing is, the more energy it has. Circle the one with more.
Energy is never made and never destroyed. It only moves or
changes kind. A ball that stops rolling passes its energy to the carpet and air as heat and sound.
Which has more energy of movement?
Circle one, and say what decided it: speed or mass.
A
B
Which has more?
Because of…
1. a tennis ball thrown slowly
the same ball thrown hard
2. a lorry at 10 mph
a bicycle at 10 mph
3. a bowling ball rolling fast
a marble rolling fast
4. you walking
you running

Collisions pass energy on.
When a moving thing hits a still one, some of its energy passes
over.
A marble rolls into a line of still marbles and the one at the far end shoots off. Where did that end marble get its energy from?
A car crash at 40 mph does far more damage than one at 20 mph — much more than twice as much. Using energy, suggest why.
A ball rolls across the carpet and slowly stops. Its energy did not disappear. Where did it go? Give two places.
The Energy of Movement — Try It
Grade 4 · Energy · Page 3 of 3
DIRECTIONS: Roll a marble down a ramp (a book) at a light object. Try three heights. Change only the height.
Height I released from
How far the object moved
Try again — how far?
low
middle
high
What is the pattern? Write it as a sentence beginning "The higher the marble started…"
The marble is not moving at all when you let go. So where does its movement energy come from?
