The 8:12

Name Date
DIRECTIONS: Use the timetable. All the times are in the morning.
Down a column is ONE BUS, at each place it goes. That is the journey. Across a row is ONE PLACE, at each time a bus reaches it. That is the wait.
A dash means that bus goes past without stopping.

  2. You are standing at Market Square at 7:55 am. How long until the next bus, and which one is it?
  3. How long does bus 3 take to go all the way from Elm Street to Hill Top?

  4. Bus 4 has a dash next to the Swimming Pool. Say in your own words what that means for somebody waiting there.

Working Backwards

DIRECTIONS: Start from the time you must be there. Work back to the last bus that beats it.
The last bus that fits is the answer, not the first. An earlier one just means standing about.

The Last One That Fits

DIRECTIONS: Use the timetable on page 2.
  1. You have to be at The Library by 9:00 am. Which is the last bus you can catch, and what time does it leave Elm Street?
    Show your work
  2. Take that bus. How long are you standing about at the library before 9:00 am?
  3. Your friend says "just get bus 4, it is quicker" — but you are going to the Swimming Pool. What is wrong with that advice?
  4. The pool closes at 11:00 am. What is the last bus that gets you there while it is still open, and how long would you have?

What a Timetable Does Not Say

Life Skills · Everyday · Page 5 of 5

DIRECTIONS: The last two have no single right answer.
  1. You get to Elm Street at 8:13 am and the bus has just gone. When is the next one, and how long is the wait?
  2. Somebody tells you "there is a bus every half hour". Look down the Elm Street row and say whether that is true.
  3. Which gap between buses is the longest one on this timetable? Write the two times and the length of the gap.
    Show your work
  4. A timetable tells you when the bus is meant to be there. Write one sentence about what you should do differently because of the word "meant".
  5. You need to be at Hill Top, and you can walk there from The Library in 20 minutes. Does that give you any bus you did not have before? Which one, and why might you still not want it?
